What's Important About the Essential B Vitamin Pantothenic Acid?
Pantothenic acid is Vitamin B5. It assists other B vitamins in the conversion of food into energy. It is important factor in the production of enzymes and in assisting nerves communicate to the brain. It is one of the vitamins for stress and also helps the body deal with allergies, chronic fatigue, heartburn and migraines.
While Pantothenic acid is abundant in many foods such as whole grains, fish and yogurt, much of it is lost through processing.
Pantothenic acid is needed by the body in the production of stress hormones. Stresses like depression and anxiety increase the cause the body to use up its store of Pantothenic acid.
When used in combination with two other B vitamins, choline and thiamin, Pantothenic acid is useful for treatming allergy and heartburn.
While no RDA is established for Pantothenic acid, an adequate amount is usually easily obtained through diet and a good multivitamin.
High Doses of Folic Acid Shown to Reduce High Blood Pressure in the Short Term.
In a study published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition fifteen women received 15 mg folate each day for three weeks. On average their systolic blood pressure dropped by 4.5 and diastolic dropped 5.3 mmHG.
A drop in homocysteine levels were also reported by the researchers when compared to the placebo group.
Since other studies link increased homocysteine levels to the risk of cardiovascular disease, it is suggested that lowering homocysteine also lowers the risk of cardiovascular disease.
The researchers randomly placed healthy post-menopausal women into one of two groups from a total of 30 volunteers. One group received Folic Acid supplementation while the other group received a placebo. The folate group saw significant drops in their nightime blood pressure levels while the placebo group did not.
Since this was a small study, larger long term studies are called for.
